Chloramphenicol Ear Drop 10ml

Chloramphenicol ear drops are a topical antibiotic solution used to treat bacterial infections of the outer ear, particularly otitis externa (inflammation of the ear canal). The 10ml formulation is typically prescribed to manage infections effectively.

Key Uses
Chloramphenicol ear drops are indicated for:
- Bacterial Ear Infections: Specifically effective against infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria in the ear canal.

Mechanism of Action
Chloramphenicol works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the bacterial ribosome, preventing the formation of proteins necessary for bacterial growth and replication, thereby helping to clear the infection.

Dosage and Administration
- Adults and Children: The usual dosage is 3 to 4 drops in the affected ear 2 to 3 times a day.
- Application Method:
1. Lie down or tilt your head so that the infected ear faces upwards.
2. Pull the earlobe gently to straighten the ear canal (up and back for adults, down and back for children).
3. Administer the prescribed number of drops into the ear canal.
4. Keep the ear facing up for about 1 to 2 minutes to allow the medication to reach the infection.
5. A sterile cotton plug may be inserted into the ear opening to prevent leakage.

Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Temporary stinging or burning sensation in the ear.
- Itching or irritation in the ear canal.
- Allergic reactions (rare), such as rash or swelling.

Serious side effects are rare but can include:
- Changes in vision or severe allergic reactions.
- Symptoms of blood dyscrasias, such as unusual bruising or bleeding.

Warnings and Precautions
- Contraindications: Not suitable for individuals with known hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol or those with a history of blood disorders.

- Use with Caution: Should be used cautiously in patients with a history of bone marrow suppression or those taking other medications that may affect blood cell counts.

- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant or breastfeeding, as there may be risks associated with chloramphenicol use during these periods.

Storage
Store chloramphenicol ear drops at room temperature (below 25°C), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use.
